Bleach is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Bleach is a 200+ manga series (which evolved into anime series) which follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki. Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper (Shinigami) which is similar to Grim Reaper in American culture. Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper when gaining the powers from Rukia Kuchiki. Accepting the task of becoming a Soul Reaper asks that Ichigo defends humans from evil spirits and pushing them into the afterlife.
As a Japanese manga, Bleach was collected into 58 volumes. Better known as tankobon voulmes, each book has a poem that discusses the character placed on the cover. In Japan, 500 plus chapters have been released in Japan. In the English versions, chapter names are written in English with katakana above each of them. In Japan, ebooks were released in color in 2-12 for the Soul Societ arc volumes.
Bleach was released into an animated television series by Studio Pierrot for 8 years (2004-2012). Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) began running Bleach in 2006 in the United States.
Selling millions of copies in Japan, the United States is equally a fan of Bleach. U.S. fans have made Bleach a top ten animated series in 2006-2008.
In addition, four features were released based on the Bleach series. The director is the same Noriyuki Abe who directed the animation series. Features have been released each December with the first in 2006.
Rock musicals were created in 2005, covering Soul Society arcs, and the Substitute.
A trading card game (two actually) were created and released starting in 2004. The release of an English version started in 2007. As of 2008, six sets were released and a seventh set was halted because of the recession and lost of sales because of it.
An artbook was released in Europe, along with the expected United State and Japan. The compilation provided color art work from the author and originals including commentary.
Tite Kubo joined with another author to create two novels which were published in 2006 and 2008. These novles were a view of the dark side instead of Ichigo’s adventure.
Over 75 plus million copies of the Japanese manga Bleach series were sold as of 2012, and with North America selling 1 million, Bleach has turned into the best selling manga series of all time. Awards have lined up at the Bleach series door with Shogakukan Manga Award, and more.
